One giant leap for beankind. 3D Walking character using Away3D
Flash Dev
As promised in my previous article regarding a certain criminally insane tentacle, I have been working on some more complex mesh animations in Away3D. I struggled through a lot of hidden traps working on this one, and came out the other end witn a much greater understanding of character design and animation in Away3D. Creating 3D characters for use in Flash games and apps requires a lot of small sacrifices in detail for increased memory usage and  frames per second.

The Process :

Starting in 3DSMax, I modelled my "Bean Bag" man as simply and with as few surfaces as possible. Still using Max I rigged my character up to a biped and layed out some footsteps for him to follow. After animating the rest of the body I created his nice and simple bean-bag texture. Once the model was exported and prepared for use in Flash, it was imported into flash as an Away3D class. Then the texture and other AS3 events were applied for mouse interaction to give you a good view :)

Now this by no means has a "great" texture and that is because this is an animation test. More on textures another time. :) Here is the final animation. Roll over to view, Click and drag your mouse to rotate.

Now that I have a "feel" for Away3D, I think the direction of the next few articles should be more complex animation, more detailed models, better textures. Remember, it helps a lot in terms of memory usage in Flash to keep the face count of your models low, and I believe that a good texture can bring a simple model to life while a very detailed model would still suffer without a great texture!
